Alameda Bicycle is BART's Exclusive Bike Station Operator!
Our goal is to propagate secure, convenient bicycle parking facilities in every BART station. The balance lies in increasing our services and security for users while reducing costs for BART. Since taking over Fruitvale Bike Station in November 2004, we have reduced funding each year.
If you have specific questions regarding bike station operations, please contact Fruitvale and Berkeley. For general questions, please email me directly at gene@alamedabicycle.com.
Thanks, and keep that car in the garage! - Gene Oh, President

How it works (Fruitvale & Berkeley)
All users must fill out the Registration Form prior to using our facilities. Pre-register at home or at station.
- Check in your bike and we'll give you a receipt.
- If you need any repairs, just let us know.?
- Bring your receipt to the station and we'll return your bike.
- If you lose your receipt, you can use a signature. If you cannot pickup your bicycle, people you designate can pickup your bike for you.
Some rules (Fruitvale & Berkeley)
You can use our free bicycle parking facilities as many times as you like. But keep in mind that funding for this initiative is scarce, and we ask that you agree with these simple procedures:
- Due to security reasons, we do not allow overnight parking at Fruitvale and Berkeley (exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for reverse commuters, etc. Please inquire). A $5 overnight fee will be assessed each night, and bicycles left over one week will be given to police as a possible stolen bicycle.
- We will ensure your bicycle will not be accessible to the public and therefore will be safe from theft. However, you are responsible for damages which may occur or missing articles attached to the bicycles, as well as bikes left overnight.
- For your safety, only you and those who you designate on the Registration Form will be able to pick up your bicycle.
- While the checkout process should take less than a minute, mornings may get busy and bog down. So please plan on arriving five minutes before your train’s departure.
How it works (Embarcadero)
We use BikeLink™ cards to aid in security and increase convenience for our users. You can use the same BikeLink™ card for bike lockers found throughout BART stations, ferry terminals, and transit stations.
BikeLink™ cards can be purchased at www.bikelink.org, Embarcadero InTransit info kiosk, Fruitvale & Berkeley Bike Stations, and Alameda Bicycle. Upon registration, we'll deduct a $5 one-time registration fee to use Embarcadero Bike Station. You'll be left with $15 in credit to use at Embarcadero and all bike lockers throughout the state.
Getting started
- Get ID verification – simply slide your unregistered card into the slot reader (keep card in slot). The kiosk will dial BikeLink™ customer service and register you on the spot!
- Stickers will be mailed to you. Place stickers on the side of seat tube of frame – towards the top of seat tube. Sticker will be vertically placed so that numbers are perpendicular to frame.
- In the meantime, use the hang tags provided at Embarcadero, write down your card #, and hang on your bike. You can also use the hang tags when using a secondary bike that doesn't have sticker attached.
Using the station
- Place card in the slot and leave it in the slot until it is read.
- Please close the door behind you and DO NOT allow users in. Everyone must check-in and check-out with their own cards. This ensures security for all!
- Once inside, you have 10 minutes to remain in the station. Beyond this, an alarm will sound and we will be alerted of potential security breaches. This helps us in case the door is left open or if a mass-theft attempt is under way.
- When re-entering to check-out, simply place card in the slot as you did when entering.

Some rules (Embarcadero)
Access hours:
Embarcadero Bike Station is available whenever Embarcadero BART Station is
open. Generally, the station is
open 4:00 am – 1:00 am.
Add value to card:
Call
888-540-0546, or go to BikeLink.org and click “add value to card”.
Lost card:
Because
the value is stored in the card, a lost card equals lost money. You will have to purchase a new
card. Call the 888-540-0546
immediately to ensure the card no longer has access to Embarcadero Bike
Station.
Friends’ access:
We
will try a system allowing up to 2 friends at a time to use the Embarcadero
Bike Station with you. They use
the provided hang tags and write your BikeLink™ card number on them, then lock
their bike next to yours. You will
not be charged extra for this. We
say “try”, because there are all sorts of ways a person can attempt to cheat
the system this way. Obviously,
you are responsible for your friends' behavior. Assuming this works, it will remain a benefit with your
Access Code.
Mis-use:
The security
and financial viability of Embarcadero Bike Station is dependent upon each
person checking-in and checking-out upon entering the station. Therefore, please do your part and do
not allow entry to others, even regular users. Our hotline is available to help those that have card errors
or lost cards.
To ensure that the rules are being followed by all, we will
perform random, routine checks.
Unauthorized bikes will be locked and bike owners will be charged a $25
site visit unlock fee. This
applies to both non-members who park their bikes and members who “fee dodge” -
slip in the cage without signing-in, then signing-in and out when they retrieve
their bike.
Long-term parking:
Embarcadero Bike Station allows you to park your bicycle up to 10 days in a
row. After that, your bicycle and
card may be locked and you may be charged a $25 site visit unlock fee.
Fruitvale Managers
Next time you stop by for a tune-up or just to lock up, make sure to say hi to our Fruitvale Bike Station Managers.
